Once an important market town and a coaching stop at a crossing on the River Stort, Bishop's Stortford still has many of its historical features. So it's an ideal place to explore the river valley and the countryside.
While the town is at the end of the navigable river, you can walk north along the towpath and find the Castle Gardens Park, with play area and the Waytemore Castle mound. Further along there's Grange Paddocks and plenty of places for a picnic.
Back at the riverside wharf, you find the area has been redeveloped with shops and, importantly, some great places to stop for a cooling drink and bite to eat.
